Loggerhead sea turtles are the most common sea turtle found off the coast of North Carolina.
They can weigh between 300-400 lbs we they reach maturity. They nest between the
months of May & August and lay approximately 150 eggs. The same turtle may nest a
couple times in one nesting season.
Green sea turtles aren't as common in North Carolina. Only a handful may nest in
North Carolina in a particular nesting season. They are the second largest sea turtle and
mainly live in the tropical waters. In Hawaii, they are known as the "honu".
Leatherback sea turtles are the largest species. They have thick leathery skin and are the
most northern dwelling reptile in the world. They are extremely endangered and are rare in
North Carolina. One leatherback nested in North Carolina this past year. Their diet
consists mainly of jellyfish.
